Sunshine Scott - Eat With Your Eyes

Sunshine Scott has hit us with several releases over the course of 2025, but ‘Eat With Your Eyes’ is definitely one of my favorites. This pop release from Scott is yet another iconic and evolved sound that has left the genre feeling refreshed. The track features the iconic horns that are always prominent in her releases, as Scott is quite talented on the saxophone herself. Sunshine Scott's releases always have a theatrical jazzy vibe to them that separates them from a lot of other artists. There is a unique and raw sound to the instrumentals and vocals that gives them a live performance feel.

Scott has founded a music career dedicated to moving against the patriarchy, and taking back the power in the music industry for women. Scott is also another fantastic hidden artist within Nashville who creates and promotes her content without a label behind her. Scott not only creates hit after hit with musically rich, catchy and entertaining tracks and visuals, but she is completely self-made. She creates her own visuals, covers for her releases, as well as her costumes and makeup! Scott truly is an all-around talent! When looking into this release, I wanted to dive deeper into the inspiration behind her unique aesthetic as an artist. When speaking with Scott about where she derived her inspiration to create, she had this to say:

“I view my role in pop music as a role of absurdity and defiance. Everyone takes everything too seriously all the time and we live in a world that needs a balance of escapism and reform. I like to personify social issues I have dealt with throughout my life and career through this fantastical lens.”

When dealing with a genre like pop music that is so heavily saturated, it can be difficult to attack at an angle where you are viewed as “doing something different”, but Scott has a way of being very intuitive with her music in every way. She has a connection with her music in ways many pop artists working under a label don't have the option to. Her overall aesthetic is pretty, girly and mythical, but digging deep into her visuals and lyrics proves very quickly that this is not the case. Diving into this, when asked specifically about the inspiration behind Eat With Your Eyes, Scott said:

“In this case, the patriarchy loves to view women as something to be consumed, not taken seriously, So I'll be unserious, dress up like a Rococo three tiered cake, all while reclaiming the sensual gaze for myself. It's spiteful, it's cute, it's me saying F-U, I'm gonna be frilly and still do better than those who look down on me for having a personality.”

Eat With Your Eyes is an ironic take on how people (specifically men) view women as a whole, but particularly within the music industry. As Scott said, this track was a way for her to take her sensuality back. The music on this track is, in its nature, rather sensual itself. The tempo is slower, and the beats are pronounced and dramatic. The flow of the music feels romantic, but the lyrics tell another story. The lyrics of the song suggest turning the trope around, and criticizing the trope that men think it's acceptable to “eat with their eyes” or openly objectify women in their daily lives, but especially women within the music industry.

When asking about the inspiration for her style, including her costumes, makeup, visuals for videos, and everything else. Scott spoke to her childhood insecurities, and how she has come to overcome those barriers to be able to accurately showcase herself as a musician and an artist. Here's what she had to say:

“I draw a lot of my visual inspiration from the cartoons and movies I grew up watching. I was made fun of for being so whimsical as a kid, and suppressed my joy for so long. Now, I want to unapologetically live in a Barbie Princess Winx Club Sailor Moon Dream World for the child in me and for all the people out there who feel the same.”

Sunshine Scott’s music not only serves as an iconic, fresh take on pop music, but she herself serves as an inspiration for women, girls, and all aspiring artists. She has taken her feminine power back not only in her music, but in every aspect of her life. She carries herself on and off stage with an admirable, divine confidence that expertly displays itself within her craft. Eat With Your Eyes is a perfect example of the way that Scott has managed to incorporate multiple genres of music, multiple instruments and styles, and create projects that are lyrically and musically brilliant.
