Brittany Broski - The Sun

Brittany Tomlinson, better known for her internet handle Brittany Broski, has been teasing her fantastic singing voice on her social media for years. Broski has several artistic passions, and lots of artistic insight. However, Broski has always expressed her endless passion for all things music, leaving many fans wondering if she might decide to pursue a music career. Fans' prayers were answered with Broski's cover of ‘Adore You’ by Harry Styles, followed by an announcement of her debut original ‘The Sun’.

At first listen, this track features deep bass, with some clear derivatives of a blues sound. Broski's deep, rich vocals convey a powerful message about wondering how you can be “too good, but still not enough” for someone you love. This pop ballad, while being a part of a very mainstream and saturated genre, separates itself from a lot of the recent releases we’ve seen. With this long-anticipated release, we finally get a glimpse into the technical vocals and incredibly rich lyricism. Broski frequently shares her insight into visual art, poetry, literature, music, and much more, this is clear in her first release. The visuals behind the track, the lyricism and the musicality were all meticulously thought out to create a glimpse into the mind of Brittany Broski herself.

Digging into the music itself, Broski has been an avid consumer of pop and all things pop culture related. Broski takes inspiration from many different genres of music, and is able to find a unique sound within the pop space. It's always interesting to see how an artist can derive inspiration from their own taste and artists they appreciate. Broski's love for different artists and genres is increasingly broad, meaning she can derive all different kinds of sound to create something that separates her from a more “mainstream” sound. The main components of the track that sealed the deal for me music wise were the tantalizing bassline and the bluesy piano following the chorus in the background. The passion within the music itself, lyrics aside, really grip you and take you along this story that Broski is weaving. I love listening to a track where the music grips me before the lyrics, and together they have the same follow through for the rest of the track.

Diving into the lyrics of this release, they are simple in nature, but are also beautifully poetic in their execution. While these lyrics don't follow the same humor that Broski is known for, it shows us a side of her that we don't get to see as often. Broski is an incredibly dynamic creator, and in a similar light, a very dynamic artist. Entertainer and comedic creator by day, poetic and profound songwriter by night. There are biblical references, relatable and meaningful metaphors, and overall incredibly rounded out lyrics that flow very well. A notable lyric for me, is the lyrics tying up the chorus; “How am I too good and still not enough, If I'm hangin' the stars in your sky?, And you spin me around 'til you're done, I’ll give you my light but I can’t be the Sun”. The overall lyricism of this piece is just the right mix of poetic and understandable, that the track is incredibly easy to relate to, which makes for an easy first listen.

The track also features amazing visuals that -if you are a Brittany Broski fan- don't really come as a surprise. The visualizer features several allusions to romantic and renaissance artwork, which Broski also speaks about frequently on her ‘Art History’ videos on her Youtube channel (where you can find this visualizer). This visualizer perfectly accompanies the video the boldness of the track it was made for, further tying together and solidifying Broski's future music career.

If you are on the hunt for new artists to discover, Brittany Broski is definitely worth checking out. Especially if you are on the hunt for a unique Pop artist that features sounds derived from other genres such as Rock and Blues. Broski has once again taken an artform and absolutely dominated in her approach, and I can’t wait to check out what releases follow.
